I traveled through China for 3 weeks in 2000
My company had 9 locations there, and an office in HK. Traveled to all 9, using all manner of transportation. Sites included Wuhan, Beijing and other locations. I was deemed an "honored guest," meaning I traveled with local partners (the comm party in one site) and was always given first preference at meals. I told everyone before I arrived I was a vegetarian, to avoid monkey brain issues, and that worked great except I lost 8 pounds. The thing about that trip was, every single meal was Chinese food. Every one. We never had Italian, or brats, or anything except rice, bok choy and carrots, for the most part. So as we would drive from from the train station/ferry/airport to the plant, we would pass American fast food places like McDonald's and KFC. And by about day 10, I was begging (in my mind) to stop at one. I didn't ask, face and all that, but wow, I have never wanted fast food more than I did for the second half of that trip.
Incredible experience, though. Great Wall, Tianamen Square, Forbidden City, etc.
